Dojang code of conduct
The key to conduct in the dojang is synonymous with ATA life skills:
Courtesy, Loyalty, Respect, Perseverance, Honor, Integrity, and Self-Control.
This conduct becomes evident as you watch more senior students during classes.
1. Students and instructors bow to the flags each time they enter or leave the floor to demonstrate respect to instructors and fellow students.
2. If students arrive after their class has started, they ask permission from the instructor to enter class.
3. If a student needs to leave the floor for any reason, they obtain permission from an instructor.
4. If a student needs to leave class early, they obtain mission from the instructor prior to class.
5. Students respond “Yes/No, Sir or Ma’am” in conversation with instructors, stand respectfully and address them using their proper title and last name. This applies both on and off the floor in the dojang and also functions which may occur outside the dojang.
6. Students turn away from their instructor or partner when they need to adjust their dobak or belt.
7. Students participate in class enthusiastically; however, they avoid unnecessary conversation.
8. No student, regardless of rank, instructs or corrects another student without permission from the supervising instructor.
9. A clean, pressed dobak is imperative in each class as a reflection of the student’s pride. All students wear either the complete dobak or non-taekwondo clothes while in the studio. Please do not mix the two styles of dress.
10. Female students should wear a white t-shirt (only white) under their dobak. They do not loiter around the studio in a sports bra or similar attire before or after classes.
11. Male students may wear a white t-shirt (only white) under their dobak.
12. Students do not wear shoes on the workout floor unless they have a medical reason to do so. Shoes worn on the workout floor should be specifically designed for that purpose and used only for wear on the mat.
13. Students do not wear any jewelry other than a wedding ring during class.
14. All belts should be tied to hang evenly, as one side represents the mind and the other side represents the body.
15. Students do not engage in any sparring without all proper gear and direct supervision of an instructor.
16. There is no use of profanity on the dojang premises at any time.
17. Students obtain an instructor’s permission before attending another ATA school or martial arts function.
18. High ranking visitors to the class are greeted with appropriate respect; if class is in session, all students immediately stop, come to attention and bow.
19. Students, parents, and guests do not converse with any person involved in a class without permission from the instructor. Similarly, students do not converse with parents without the instructor’s permission during class. Spectators cheer on students enthusiastically but do not instruct them or coach them during class time.
20. Students ensure that they have the correct uniform on for the given day. Monday- White dobak or XMA uniform with black t-shirt; Tuesday-Wednesday –White dobak; Thursday-Friday- Red school t-shirt and black workout pants. During testing week, students may wear a red school t-shirt and black workout pants so that the white dobak can be cleaned and pressed for testing. If students need to deviate from the dress code, they obtain approval from an instructor before class begins.
